A Look Into A Poet’s World

By Sabrina Rozza

April 23, 2024

An artist’s job is to inspire others through a medium that communicates a feeling and expresses emotion.  They hope their art has the ability to be seen and appreciated by others and even more, a desire to move people.  The month of April is dedicated to the literary artists of the world, poets and I had the tremendous opportunity to get to know a celebrated New York poet, Phylisha Villanueva.

Phylisha accepting A Women of Distinction honor, awarded by the city of Yonkers.

Phylisha Villanueva was appointed the official Poet Laureate for Westchester County, New York, in January 2024.  A prestigious title given by city officials recognizing Poetry and its art form to serve as a medium to defy boundaries and serve as a platform for underrepresented voices to promote.  As Poet Laureate, Phylli will hold this title for the next three years working as a Public Humanities position in the city of Westchester and literary ambassador to promote poetry and literature through workshops, readings, and performances.  Phylli is a blend of artistic professions that allows her influence to be felt amongst her community.  She is an art teacher at Arts Westchester, co-founder for the Blue Door Art Center, lead coordinator for Yonkers Future Stars, and a member of the Jazz and Poetry Choir Collective.  Her personal work is authentic to her life experiences with focus on colorism, identity, resilience, and women’s empowerment in her art is made with the intention to “spark conversations and inspire change within [her] community.” Phylli’s work will leave a trail burning brightness for the next generation of artists.

"I discovered my passion for writing poetry in middle school when I began to enjoy reading. Even now, my favorite book is Bronx Masquerade."-PV

Phylli’s start in poetry began in middle school. “I loved reading about kids reciting spoken word and writing poetry to express themselves. One of my earliest poems was inspired by my mixed emotions when my mom wouldn't let me attend the school dance.”

Phylli’s childhood in Yonkers, New York played an influential role in her identity. Her hometown’s influence and renowned art history pushed her to “strive for excellence in [her] craft”. Throughout her upbringing, Phylli recognized the power poetry had for her and her community, and knew she wanted to carve out a space for herself in this career. “I’ve come to realize that poetry has the power to unite people and also amplify diverse voices.” Her passion to empower young people in her community resonated deeply, as her transition to motherhood had a personal impact on her current role. “It has allowed me to show my daughter that dreams can become reality with dedication, perseverance, and a deep love for one's craft.”

"Through poetry, I find inspiration, hope, and a sense of connection that reminds me I am never alone."

"Poetry has genuinely transformed my life. It has given me the confidence to lead, the strength to heal, and the motivation to pursue my purpose."

Being in the spotlight completing her Humanities duties means extra time in the mirror each morning! Phylli’s daily routine aims to honor her unique features. She uses a BB cream to enhance her skin, while still showcasing her freckles. Blended Society Beauty’s Complexion Refiner brush, coupled with The Blur makeup sponge, would be the perfect addition to replicate her sheer and natural foundation routine.  She likes to add a bit of highlight to her eyes and lips to complete her look and open up her features.  Phylli’s go-to products speak to her authenticity as she likes to support Black-owned businesses by purchasing Black natural skincare products. Her favorites are rose face oils and turmeric face masks.  She states, “Through a consistent beauty routine, I can look and feel refreshed, even when the spotlight demands can be overwhelming.”  She then tends to her hair using coconut oil to keep her luscious curls healthy and stage-ready.

Owning space in the spotlight can come with its challenges. It’s common to see people in this position want to show up as someone other than themselves, but for Phylli, this is quite the opposite. “In my years of experience as an artist, I've come to appreciate the importance of embodying a distinct image. This involves selecting attire that reflects my artistic sensibilities, paying attention to personal presentation details, and projecting an aura of confidence and approachability. Understanding the power of a solid initial impression.” When the spotlight is shining too brightly, she likes to watch motivational videos, meditate, and put on her favorite outfit to refocus her energy. It is clear that Phylli’s authenticity, passion, and drive have earned her the powerful roles she possesses.

People from every corner of the world can look to Phylisha Villanueva as an inspiration for change and artistic empowerment.  She leaves our Blended Society Beauty readers with a few pieces of advice, “Never forget the power of your voice and the impact you can have on the world around you. Your creativity is a gift that can inspire, uplift, and bring joy to others. Keep dreaming, keep creating, and never stop believing in the power of your unique talents and abilities. You have the power to make a difference, so go out there and pursue your dreams with all the passion and determination you possess.” She also humbly reminds us to, “Always remove your makeup before bed to avoid clogged pores and breakouts!”

Blended Society Beauty’s mission is to share stories of people around the world to celebrate authenticity and unify the human spirit.  By celebrating National Poetry Month, we celebrate Phylli’s dedication towards uplifting the community through her powerful poetry as a way to experience life in someone else’s shoes, creating more empathy in the world around us.
